SIMONBURN, Route 19, April 2017
On the first warm day of spring, where coats were not required, my partner John and I did the Simonburn walk from the April issue of Country Walking. Leaving the pretty village of Simonburn, the walk was a pleasant mixture of woodland, open moorland and the iconic Hadrian’s Wall
path. En route you have the chance to visit the Temple of Mithras, a site that
was excavated in 1949. The original artefacts are now on display at the Great North Museum in Newcastle but cast replicas at the site make for fascinating viewing. The circular walk returns to Simonburn where the local tearoom, complete with a sunny spot in the garden, was a must for a reviving cup of tea. Lorraine McSweeney, Newcastle upon Tyne
