The Royal Oak, South Downs, West Sussex*
Tucked in the woods between Petersfield and Chichester, the Royal Oak at Hooksway is a popular spot for walkers exploring the South Downs. It’s said to be the last remaining building in a village abandoned due to plague, and haunted by a sheep rustler who was shot there in the 17th century. Today the cosy pub, with its large garden and two log fires, makes a perfect thirst-slaking stop after climbing to the view-rich heights of Beacon Hill on an 11-mile circular from the magnificent 17th century estate of Uppark.
