Huddersfield Narrow, Pennines

-

Best for: Hills The Huddersfield Narrow Canal is a poem in stone. Built to compact dimensions to save water, along its 20mile length there are beautifully-crafted locks, bridges, loading wharfs and small tunnels. Many bridges have sinuous tracks that allowed horses to walk up, over, around and down when the towpath crosses from one bank to the other. It’s steep countryside and so you look down on mill towns and gaze up to the moors above. To cross under the highest stretch of its Pennine route, the canal plunges into the three-mile Standedge Tunnel, whilst walkers take the track that boat horses once trod, climbing up over the moors to a point where the canal is more than 600 feet beneath you. With 74 locks, the canal does more climbing than most, but has regular pubs and tearooms as reward. WALK HERE: Download Pule Hill at www.lfto.com/bonusroutes
