was famed for his paintings of horses including Whistlejac­ket which hangs in the National Gallery. Primarily a self-taught artist, he spent 18 months dissecting horses and published a book about their anatomy, which provided the foundation for his phenomenal­ly detailed artwork. And it wasn’t just horses: he painted lions, tigers, giraffes and even kangaroos too.
