Nathan’s first summit is sweet

-

Your feature on ‘My first mountain’ inspired me to tell you about Nathan’s first mountain.

Nathan is 32 and he has Down’s syndrome. He lives in Bristol and for many years has attended a theatre company based there, participating in workshops and performing in plays. They are currently raising money and Nathan wanted to help, so earlier this month, along with his mum, members of the theatre company, local friends and a mountain leader, Nathan climbed Sugar Loaf in the Brecon Beacons. Having a mountain leader meant that a pace was set appropriate for everyone in the group – a huge help when the wind, rain and hail came in!

In so many ways it was Nathan who led the way and as if on cue, as he got to the peak the sun came out. I have climbed Sugar Loaf many times before, but taking time on a mountain and seeing it through others’ eyes added a dimension to the walk that took me by surprise. We all made special memories that day – and it’s an experience Nathan wants to do again! Hilary Davis, Bwlch, Brecon Beacons Hilary wins socks
