A tarn that’s no longer nameless

-

For millennia this little pool has sat, nameless, in the windy breach between Wild Boar Fell and Swarth Fell in the Yorkshire Dales. But now it has a name. The authors of the Wainwright’s Pennine Journey trail have persuaded Ordnance Survey to name it Swarth

Fell Tarn on their next reprint. It’s in honour of Alfred Wainwright himself, who never understood why such a prominent pool didn’t have a name. Find it at grid ref SD753973. And find out more about the 247-mile trail at www. penninejourney.org.uk
