THE AUTUMN SURGE
Aira Force, Cumbria
Watching a waterfall in midsummer can be a bit like watching a Queen concert with the volume down. The water’s a thin thread, there’s no cacophonous BOOM as it hits rock bottom, and you can stand close to it without feeling enshrouded in a watery mist. And that’s all a bit rubbish. In autumn, our waterfalls start to power up as rain fills the water table, bringing every waterfall in the nation fully online in a glorious Brian May crescendo with Mercury vocals. There might be more impressive places to see it than 65ft Aira Force near Ullswater. But it’s hard to think of any.
