PLAN YOUR TRIP
GETTING HERE
Stourhead lies just off the A303 in Wiltshire, between Wincanton and Mere.
WALK HERE
Stourhead is a National Trust estate so admission charges apply (unless you’re a member). Once through the gates there are 18 miles of paths and tracks to explore, through the gardens and into the surrounding parkland. Perhaps the best route is to go up Six Wells Bottom, turning west to Alfred’s Tower, returning via Great Combe, Baker’s Copse and the Garden Lake. Maps and guides are available from the estate entrance.
WHERE TO EAT/STAY
The closest option is the Spread Eagle in Stourton, which is actually part of the Stourhead estate (01747 840587, www. spreadeagleinn.com). It offers doubles with breakfast for £125 and gourmet evening meals around £15.Alternatively, try the White Lion in Bourton (01747 840866, www.whitelionbourton.co.uk) which offers doubles with breakfast for £80 per night.
