WALK HERE
Turn to Walk 4 in this issue.
GETTING THERE
The walk starts at a car park just south of the A283 between Steyning and Storrington. The 100 bus between Pulborough and Burgess Hill stations runs along the main road and stops at the turn-off (Buncton crossroads) from where it’s a ¾ -mile walk along a quiet lane to the start. Regular service Mon-Sat, see www.compass-travel.co.uk.
WHERE TO STAY
Steyning is the nearest town and Springwells ( www.springwells.co.uk, 01903 812446) is a grand country house on the High Street. It has six ensuite rooms with luxury beds, and a pool room and outdoor pool too. Don’t miss the signature porridge, with caramelised sugar, cream and whisky. Doubles from £99/pn. Or for a downland adventure (without camping wild!) drive 14 miles west to Bignor Hill car park, then walk two miles to Gumber Farm ( www.nationaltrust. org.uk/holidays, 01243 814484) with its flint bothy and campsite. Facilities are basic, but the view – and the peace – are priceless. From £12pp/pn.
WHERE TO EAT
Among Steyning’s timberframed cottages and flint houses you’ll find plenty of cafés and pubs. The Steyning Tea Rooms ( www.facebook.com/steyningtearooms) and the grocer-cum-café The
Sussex Produce Company ( www.thesussexproducecompany.co.uk) are popular spots during the day, with the latter opening for seasonally inspired dinners on Friday and Saturday too. Other evening options include
The Chequer Inn ( www.chequerinnsteyning.co.uk) and the White Horse Smokehouse & Grill ( www.whitehorsesteyning.co.uk).
