Knoydart, Lochaber
Inverie’s Old Forge is said to be the remotest pub in Britain and for walkers it’s a 15-mile hike from the nearest road at Kinloch Hourn. Even split over two days – as we’d urge– you might arrive after closing, for the Knoydart Peninsula is engrossing. First, you trace the shore of the fjord-like Loch Hourn to burst into Barrisdale Bay, where mountain, sea and silence make magic, and there’s a bothy, campsite and cottage. Next day it’s over Mam Barrisdale and down by loch and woodland to the pub. It’s proof, again, that spectacular doesn’t need height – the pass tops out at 1500 feet – but if you yearn for altitude then Ladhar Bheinn hurls up exciting ridges. Do note, though, that wilderness makes logistics for this linear route interesting: we used ferry, train, bus, taxi. Or you could just walk back...
