Miles walked this month: 90 Wild welcome

On a trip to the Lakes this month, I stopped in at Skiddaw House Hostel for tea. If you’re passing and the owners aren’t around, you can pop in, make a brew, leave some cash, and continue on your way. My companion – a chap from London – had his mind blown.

Secret path

I also showed him the ‘old’ way up to Sty Head and Scafell Pike, which climbs up beside Taylorgill Force, with a bit of a scramble. Far more thrilling than the ‘normal’ path, which misses the waterfalls entirely. Try it sometime!

Favourite place

And when we got up to Sty Head – my favourite place on Planet Earth – it was looking as gorgeous as I have ever seen it look. I reckon no Alp, no Rocky, no Himalaya can compare to this crossroads in the mountains. But that’s just me.

Note to self:

If you forget how beautiful a place is, take a friend who hasn’t seen it before.
