Medals are go, bin some litter and win Fjällräven packs, and you’ve got to see these pics from the ’30s!

ON THE DAY THIS issue hits the shelves there are 138 days to go to hit your 1000 miles in 2018 – that’s 38% of the year or 198,720 minutes. Some prodigious people have already hit their target, but whatever mileage you’re on, rest easy. If you’ve done 500 miles already your target now is 3.62 miles a day – or a shade over an hour. If you’re on 600, you need to hit 2.9 miles a day; if you’re at 700, 2.2 miles a day will see you cruise it. On the other hand if you’ve only done 400 miles by this point, you’re target’s a stilldoable 4.35 miles a day with a lunch-hour walk and halfhour round the block in the evening. ( You can always check your precise daily average required using our instant calculator at www.walk1000miles.co.uk.)

Whatever your current total, it’s important to remember: you should allow yourself 12 months from the day you started your challenge; the only other competitor in this race is the OLD you; and if you’re walking a bit more than them, you’re feeling a shade better, looking a shade browner, your smile comes a little more readily, your sleeps are a little deeper, your memories are a little more colourful, your heartbeat’s taking longer strides, or you’re a shade more at peace with yourself or the world, you’re WINNING AT #WALK1000MILES! Order your medal to mark your achievement or nail down your motivation; but do it now. Numbers are limited and they go fast.
