Walk 1
Where to start:
Market Street car park off Castle Street in the centre of Llangollen.
Along the way:
The route quickly leaves town by climbing through Pen y Coed wood to the Ceiriog Trail which offers great views of Pengwern Vale, once a meander of the River Dee. Beyond the bridleway, lanes descend to the Offa’s Dyke Path – a short stroll from Chirk Castle – which is followed to the Llangollen Canal and an exhilarating walk over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, built 1795-1805 by Thomas Telford and William Jessop. The 1007 feet (307m) long aqueduct carries the canal 126 feet above the River Dee in a cast iron trough. A World Heritage Site, it is the tallest navigable aqueduct in the world and the longest in Britain. From Trevor Wharf, on the northern side, it’s an easy stroll to Llangollen.
In a nutshell:
A scenic walk through tranquil countryside followed by towpath walking and an exhilarating crossing of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
