B is for battle fields
The last pitched battle on British soil took place at Culloden in 1746, but the preceding centuries saw many of the nation’s fields soaked with blood. Now tranquil places of green grass, it only takes a little imagination to conjure potent images of tragedy, heroism, and events that changed the course of our history. Walk the slopes at Battle near Hastings where William conquered the Saxon King Harold in 1066. Head to Bosworth in Leicestershire where the villainous/maligned King Richard III was slain in battle against Henry VII in 1485, and the Plantagenet dynasty gave way to Tudor. Or stroll at Naseby in Northamptonshire, where in 1645 the Parliamentarians won a decisive conflict against the Royalist supporters of King Charles I in the English Civil War.
