Hilbre has many wild inhabitants, but perhaps the most notable of them all was prehistoric.

The footprints of a pseudosuchian, a sort of long-legged crocodile the size of a small dog, have been found fossilised in the island’s rocks.

“I never get the name right,” says Matt, ruefully.

“I just call him Alan.”
