“The cold, crisp mornings are magical”

Says: Ranger Team Leader Suzanne, from Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park “The best thing about the Park in the autumn is, without a doubt, the colours, the colours and the colours! Plants and animals start preparing for winter, summer migrants leave and winter visitors like geese arrive and the deciduous woodlands put on a spectacular show as summer greens change to the reds, yellows and browns of autumn. It really is a beautiful time of year to take a walk and enjoy everything nature has to offer. The cold, crisp mornings, when the sky is the brightest blue and the golds and reds of the changing leaves are sharp and clear are just magical!

Callander is the largest town in the National Park, and sits right on the boundary between the Highlands and the Lowlands. The summit of Callander Crags gives you a wonderful contrast between the uplands and the rolling lowlands – a walk there takes you right in the tree canopy so have a great close-up view of the changing colours.

But there are so many places around the Park to see the changes of the seasons and our Scottish Scenic Route viewpoints offer lots of opportunities to see some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes. Like the pyramid-shaped An Ceann Mòr which takes 31 steps to climb and gives stunning elevated views of Loch Lomond, or the woven lookout perch at the Falls of Falloch, which cantilevers over the edge of the water.

And from the big views to the tiny details, autumn brings the lot: look out for the amazing fruiting bodies of all the fabulous fungi, of which there are so many varieties across the Park, all with different shapes and colours.”
