MADE IN THE MOUNTAINS

-

Outdoor adventure and wet weather go hand in hand. Especially on our little islands where, if you hadn’t already noticed, it rains a lot. A hell of a lot, in fact.

The leafy Borrowdale valley in Cumbria once got more than 12 inches of the stuff in just 24 hours, so don’t let the summer 2018 heatwave fool you. If you’re heading out this winter, you’re pretty much guaranteed to get soaked.

It’s not just rain, either. Climb to the summit of Ben Nevis and you’ll often find deep snow patches and overhanging cornices even in the height of summer, linger too long in the sub-arctic wilderness of Scotland’s Cairngorm Plateau and you could be treated to wind speeds exceeding 150mph, and walk anywhere in the British Isles during the short, dark days of winter and you’re likely to experience temperatures sinking well below freezing.

So if you’re heading out for a walk over the next few weeks or months – particularly on hills, mountains, moorlands, or coastal cliffs – you’re going to need reliable gear to keep you warm, dry, safe and happy. And that’s where Rohan comes in.

Proven in the Alps

This much-loved British brand has been producing highly technical, specialist outdoor clothing for almost half a century. Founded in 1972, with early products focusing on coldweather climbing, Rohan became an immediate hit with young British alpinists who pioneered the now common ‘fast and light’ approach to mountaineering in the European Alps and beyond.

With climbers demanding high levels of performance from their gear, Rohan quickly developed into one of the world’s leading outdoor brands – a position cemented in 1978 when its iconic Windlord Jacket was worn by Austrian mountaineer Peter Habeler when, along with Reinhold Messner, he completed the first ascent of Everest without the use of supplementary oxygen.

In the same year, British climber Al Rouse completed a legendary alpine-style ascent of Himalayan peak Jannu – the world’s 32nd highest mountain at 7710m – in a style that wouldn’t have been possible without the technical clothing he wore, which included Rohan Salopettes.

Rohan had arrived, with outdoor clothing years ahead of its time.

At home in the British hills

Now, fully four decades on from those historic 1978 ascents, Rohan clothing remains at the forefront of outdoor adventure with cutting-edge gear ready to take on every type of terrain, and every type of weather. But with a difference.

With kit that looks as good in the office or at your local pub as it does in the Yorkshire Dales or the wild open spaces of Dartmoor, Rohan’s latest range mixes performance with style, and decades of heritage with modern cutting-edge technology. You can wear it in the Alps or in Ambleside, the Himalayas or Hathersage, the Rocky Mountains or Rothiemurchus Forest, the… Okay, you get the picture.
