WALK HERE

Turn to Walk 11 for a full route card detailing a linear 9 ½ -mile walk from Stoney Middleton to Wardlow.

GETTING HERE

The walk begins in Stoney Middleton (half-anhour’s drive from Sheffield or an hour from Manchester), but we advise parking near the end in Wardlow (postcode SK17 8RP). There’s space to park on the road, but do so with consideration for residents. Arrive early enough to catch the only direct bus to Stoney Middleton (at 9:06am, Monday to Saturday only) from the bus stop near the Three Stags Head at Wardlow Mires ( www.hulleys-ofbaslow.co.uk). If you miss the bus or prefer to park in Stoney Middleton, try Chris Hudson (07828 122390) or Penny’s Cars (0791 771 0771) for a taxi. Park in Stoney Middleton just off the A623 near Lover’s Leap (S32 4TF).

WHERE TO EAT

There’s a choice of pubs and cafés at the start, end and on route, including Hobb’s Café at Monsal Head (01629 640346) and the Yonderman Café at Wardlow Mires (01298 873056). We suggest stopping for lunch midway in Great Longstone (at The Crispin or The White Lion) or in Little Longstone at The Packhorse Inn (01629 640346; www.packhorselongstone.co.uk). Mains here start from £11, including sausage and mash, and locally-sourced venison burgers.

WHERE TO STAY

Rest up in the aptly named Black Harry suite, one of six en-suite double rooms at The Moon Inn, (pictured above), a historic posthouse in Stoney Middleton ( www.themooninn.com; 01433 630203). A night’s B&B for two costs £110. Find more great places to stay nearby at: www.visitpeakdistrict.com
