It can do all this!

Walking 1000 miles is a challenge for anyone. But for some it’s an even bigger deal than it sounds. If this lot can do all this, what’s stopping you?

‘Ability is in the mind not the body’

Born in 1932, 87-year-old Florence Skinner was a racing time-trial cyclist before taking up walking after having children. She became 2018’s mostsenior Completer on 1 Jan with a super 1025 miles covered!

How has doing #walk1000miles helped and how important has it been?

It helps me feel better in myself; in my wellbeing. I can enjoy the day and not have to worry about thinking too hard! My short-term memory is causing some stress these days, but that goes when I’m outside.

What are some stand-out moments from your walking?

Walking and seal-watching at Hen Borth on Anglesey. We had to retrace our steps as a huge herd of cattle blocked our way. So a 4-mile walk became an 8-mile one! My happiest walking memories are climbing Cadair Idris at 75, via the Minffordd path, and sitting during a summer walk on the cliffs with my son and late husband. Walking has got me over some difficult times, and I still love it. I love making memories!

How does it feel to be part of the #walk1000miles community?

I love it and really appreciate the kind, lovely responses I get – plus it seems to inspire other people to escape their problems and just enjoy being out there.

What would you say to someone thinking about doing the challenge?

Just go outside. You’ll surprise yourself with what you’re able to do. Ability is in the mind not your body – and don’t let anyone tell you any different!
