WE’RE AN ECLECTIC BUNCH, us walkers. We come in all shapes and sizes. But our wants and needs are much the same: fresh air, fabulous scenery... and a comfortable, weather-defying outfit. suitable clothing and footwear makes getting outside safer and more enjoyable, but if your body doesn’t fit the manufacturers’ template or retailers’ assumptions, gear shopping can be exasperating and demoralising.

“i can’t find gear that fits me!” is one of the commonest laments we hear. That’s why we’ve produced this one-off report covering plus-sized clothing, wide-fit footwear and rucksacks for every body type. We’ve asked you for your experiences of gear shopping and you’ve shared some great advice on how to buy walking clobber that fits well. We’ve also surveyed major manufacturers about their sizing and ranges, to sort best-in-class brands from the must-do-better makes who neglect us ordinaries.

We’ve match-made six readers with core gear they’ve struggled to buy in a good fit on the high street. you can read their reviews over the next few pages. We also look beyond off-the-shelf options at extra-sized fits and customised gear. Country Walking can’t fix the outdoor gear market overnight, but we can shine a light on its shortcomings. Brands and retailers: listen up!

“Retailers and brands seem to think all walkers are young stick insects.” LOUISE , CASTLEROCK
