This is a really good halfway-house sort of throw-on: a smock, but with a fully securable zipped kangaroo pocket, windproof but not water-resistant, and a weight that is perfectly poised between unnoticeably light and meaningfully resilient. It feels (and is) very durable. I’ve worn this on really gusty April days over just a baselayer and it was as warm and regulating as a fleece. The ripstop fabric is a bit crinkly and the hood and hem aren’t adjustable, but these are small misgivings in a jacket that is highly effective and a pleasure to wear. (The men’s version also comes as a jacket for £80; I’m not sure why women aren’t given that option though.) berghaus.com
