Turn to Walk 25 at the back of this magazine for a 6¼-mile walk up Ben Vrackie from Moulin. Alternatively, you could set out from Pitlochry Station for a longer walk (8¾ miles, 5½ hours).

Arriving by car, you’re best setting off from the Ben Vrackie car park, just north of Moulin up Baledmund Road. It’s off the A924 from the centre of town. Pitlochry is a 45-minute drive from Perth via the A9. You can also get to Moulin from the railway station west car park in Pitlochry by the frequent number 24 bus (stagecoachbus.com).

For a room with views across the Tummel Valley, check into

– a 4-star B&B on a quiet Pitlochry backstreet. This Edwardian guesthouse with contemporary decor is located a 10-minute walk from the centre of town. Bed and breakfast for two sharing a small en-suite double is £90 per night (01796 472070; derrybeg.co.uk). For a short break on a budget, try Pitlochry Youth Hostel, set away from the busy main street on Knockard Road. Private rooms are available from £25 per night in October (01796 472 308; hostellingscotland.org.uk)

A historic inn with its own brewery, you’ll have passed the Moulin Hotel en route to Ben Vrackie. Why not chow down afterwards here with a plate of Vrackie Grostel? An AlpineCaledonian fusion of fried potatoes and bacon, served with a fried egg (£14.45) it’s one of the appetizing mains on the bar menu. You could wash it down with a pint of Braveheart Ale brewed just across the road (01796 472196, www.moulinhotel.co.uk). For a lighter lunch or coffee and a slice of cake, there’s a wide choice of bistros and bakeries in town, including the unashamedly outdoorsy Escape Route Café.
