KATHMANDU

Aikman

- RRP: Target price: RB

£35 £35

The Aikman uses Polartec’s highperformance Thermal Pro material, which is a mighty generous offering in a £35 fleece. It makes the Aikman a thoroughly insulating mid-layer, perfect for when the temperature drops. I found it a joy to wrap up in on cool summits – the fleecy lining is soft and snug, and the sheer thickness of the fabric gives it a cocoon-like feel. The long fit covers the derriere, too, unlike many midlayers. There’s no water-repellency to it, but it can fit comfortably under a waterproof, especially as it has no hood. However, I found that it overheated rapidly on anything more strenuous than a gentle stroll, as it’s just too thick to be breathable. It may be that the Aikman is best kept in reserve for rest stops, but it’s worth bearing in mind that at a bulky 420g, it will be quite a noticeable addition to the rucksack. I also found that there wasn’t much freedom of movement in the shoulders, so it feels a little unwieldy when moving over rocky terrain that requires hands. If you’re keeping to gentle terrain though, the Aikman will be a comforting companion on a cold day.
