Walk this way – rambling

So many places to walk and so many ways to do it! But one thing’s always the same: it’s the best way to see the world – and feel on top of it.

-

A genteel term’s raucous start.

EVER SINCE WE wobbled up onto two feet as toddlers, we’ve known what walking is – putting one foot in front of the other to get about. But that simple definition barely hints at what walking can be, and the multitude of different ways to go about it. You can bimble slowly and scramble adventurously. You can trek a long journey. You can march in protest, go on a pilgrimage, promenade beside the sea like Victorian gentry or walk the solar system. You can tread barefoot, or with snowshoes on, or Nordic-style with poles. You can take a long hike in the wilderness, bag peaks, or go on a leisurely ramble through Britain’s beautiful countryside. This special issue explores how ‘lifting and setting down each foot in turn’ can take you to all kinds of places in all kinds of ways – and help you discover walks that are just right for you, whoever you are and whatever you like.
