WALK HERE
Turn to Walk 15 in this issue for a Gable Girdle route, starting from Wasdale. You can also start from Seathwaite in Borrowdale; take path south to Stockley Bridge, then turn west to Greenhow Knott and up beside Styhead Gill to the tarn and stretcher box beyond.
GETTING HERE
No bus to Wasdale, but the 78 runs from Keswick to Seatoller (as does the Honister Rambler service in summer) which is a little over a mile along the lane from Seathwaite.
WHERE TO STAY & EAT
The Wasdale Head Inn (019467 26229; wasdale.com) is an iconic Lakeland pub with hearty meals like steak and ale pie (£14) in Ritson’s Bar, three-course dinners (£30) in Abraham’s Restaurant, and double rooms from £120pn. Over in Borrowdale, Seatoller House (01768 777218; seatollerhouse.co.uk) is a muchloved B&B with doubles from £140, while Seatoller Farm (017687 77232; seatollerfarm.co.uk) has a self-catering cottage (from £475pw), rustic campsite and Applejacks food barn serving breakfast and wood-fired pizza in summer (camping and café both seasonal).
