MEDIEVAL COSTREL NECK

-

Costrels were the precursors of modern water bottles. Made of leather or ceramic, they were the flasks carried by travellers and pilgrims, with leather thongs threaded through the holes to hang them by, and a cork or wooden bung. Inside was likely to have been small beer (a weak style of ale), which was safer to drink than water in London.
