WALK HERE

Turn to Walk 3 at the back of this issue for a 5½-mile loop from Nailsworth.

GETTING THERE

Our walk starts from Nailsworth’s Old Market in the town centre, just off the A46 from Stroud and 20 minutes’ drive from junction 13 of the M5. There’s a free long stay car park behind the library. The nearby bus station enjoys frequent services from Gloucester (63) and nearby Stroud (65 and 40), where direct trains arrive from London Paddington and Cheltenham.

WHERE TO EAT

There’s a choice of cafés and bistros in Nailsworth for a pre-walk perk-me-up (try Walkers the Bakers off the Old Market for an oven-fresh pastry too). Midway into the walk you could break for lunch at The Weighbridge Inn freehouse, home to the famous 2 in 1 pie – half succulent, beer-braised beef and mushrooms, half cauliflower and cheddar. A mini pie with a vegetable side is £11.75 (01453 832520; weighbridgeinn.co.uk). Back in Nailsworth, there’s the excellent Village Inn.

WHERE TO STAY

A far cry from Davies’ grotty tramping digs, Nailsworth’s Egypt Mill hotel offers a taste of luxury in the heart of town. B&B for two sharing a ‘cosy room’ in this converted mill costs from £76pn over winter (01453 833449; egyptmill.com). For a private hideaway, you could rent Weavers Cottage on the road up to Davies’ final home. This characterful property sleeps 4 in two double rooms. A 3-night stay in February costs from £535 (01244 356666; sykescottages.co.uk)
