As spring coincides with our freedom slowly being restored, #walk1000miles partner Ordnance Survey has an app to track your miles and fill you with ideas and confidence for exploring further afield.

IN RECENT MONTHS clocking up our miles has meant getting to know our local trails like the top of our walking boots. But as restrictions start to relax once more, we can begin to explore further from home at a time when the weather starts to improve.

So where to go with our graduallyreturning freedom? Well, Ordnance Survey’s OS Maps smartphone app has more than half a million suggestions in the form of premium ready-made routes crafted by this very magazine, as well as from our partners Trail and Trail Running.

It’s like having a pocket-sized friend who’s an expert in navigation – one that gives you the confidence to explore somewhere new without the fear of losing your way, while also brimming with ideas for new walks to try.

The app means you can have all 607 OS maps (both 1:25k and 1:50k scale) on your PC, tablet and smartphone. You can follow any route you like, with warning alerts if you head off-course, and you can even create and plot your own routes to follow on your next outdoor venture (an activity that can become seriously addictive!).

If you’re worried about the app deserting you when you’re out of signal, then fear not, because you can actually download maps and routes to your phone so you can continue using them no matter how matter how remote your miles take you.

And if you want to check out a walk before you go, you can fly through the route using the app’s 3D function.
