HELLY HANSEN
LIFA Active Crew
RRP: £40 Target price: £36 Venerable Norwegian brand Helly Hansen invented the very first technical base layer back in 1970 and this is the latest evolution of that innovative original, which pioneered the use of a wicking manmade fibre. Its then novel traits still underpin the newest incarnation. A perforated layer of fabric in contact with your skin draws heatsapping sweat droplets through to the outer layer where they can evaporate, resulting in drier therefore warmer skin. It’s simple physics and it works. The fibres also act as a layer of insulation. Although the LIFA range is largely geared towards skiers and climbers, the ‘Active’ layers like this one are light and versatile enough for general, yearround wear – be it gentle bimbling or hard and fast hiking. Imperceptibly lightweight, I liked wearing the Active Crew as much on its own as under a fleece and down jacket. Loose and unrestricting in the arms, it worked its wicking magic every time. The only drawback is that it lacks the antimicrobial qualities of a natural fibre top or a treated synthetic one. In all other respects it’s a fine all-rounder. PT
