Blue Bird flies a mile

The quiet, charming backwater of Pendine on the Carmarthen­shire coast once reverberat­ed to the roar of the fastest machine on earth. The wide expanses of super flat low-tide sand were the proving ground for an amazing first: 90 years ago, Sir Malcolm Campbell set a new world land-speed record, covering the Flying Mile in an average of 174mph while driving the NapierCamp­bell Blue Bird. It was the last time the land-speed record was achieved on British soil.
