Despite my love for urban spaces, I need the polar opposite when on holiday and there is no better place for me than Alderney, the most northerly of the Channel Islands. Despite the island’s obvious beauty, remnants of the WW2 Nazi occupation can also be seen – fortresses and bunkers pepper the coastline. My favourite spot is the gorse-strewn Longis Nature Reserve. I can spend hours here watching the meadow pipits and searching for Dartford warblers.
