Canoeing the River Wye Maria Hodson, production editor, BBC Countryfile Magazine

Drifting down a river on a balmy summer’s day is a delight, and the Wye offers magical journeys in Canadian canoes along its course. Trips range from a few hours to a few days, with stops at waterside campsites. It’s an indolent joy. Swathes of water crowfoot drape the river with white and yellow blooms. Brightly jewelled dragon- and damselflies dart over the surface; kingfishers flash past. The vibrant wildlife is offset by the peace of the surroundings and the gentle pace of the river, fringed by willows and fruit trees. The current moves you along without effort, and two people can easily navigate its broad and beautiful course. canoehire.co.uk
