RIVER RUIN FROM RUN OFF?

- Keith Jones, Whitland, Carmarthenshire

I would like to know what Adam Henson thinks about the large amounts of slurry that is spread on the land for dairy production. The spread of liquidised slurry gets into all the water courses and many are concerned about this pollution.

Six miles of the river Teifi have been wiped out by an apparent large discharge of slurry. Numbers of sea trout and salmon are 50% down on the river Towy.

Our local river the Taf has been hit much harder. Fishermen are seeing salmon and sea trout crash in numbers. Looking in the water, we see a lack of invertebrates. No hatches of fly life any more, not many dippers either; when in the past they were always lots. No large numbers of minnows and other fish fry; therefore kingfishers are no longer a common sight.

Natural Resources Wales might consider nitrogen sensitive zones but the NFU are already lobbying against this.

Farming is part and parcel of our countryside but farmers have a responsibility to ensure this pollution does not happen.
