WALKS
1 Hadrian’s Wall and the Whin Sill
It’s no secret, it’s part of the Pennine Way, but the stretch of Hadrian’s Wall east of Steel Rigg is one of the best. Not only do you pass the footprints of Roman milecastles, you also see the extraordinary Whin Sill, a vast igneous wave of rock that the Romans used as a natural fortification. A four-mile circular loop from Steel Rig carpark can be extended. northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/ activities/steel-rigg-crag-lough-walk/
2 History on the heather moors
Not strictly a circular walk, but a way-marked path from Lordenshaw car park to take in the mysterious prehistoric rock carvings, as well as an Iron Age hill fort. The whole lot can be seen in under two miles of walking. For something more challenging, make it part of a clockwise loop from Rothbury with follies on the outward leg and forest on the return. rockartmob.ncl.ac.uk/indexD.php
