VALLEY OF THE KINGS

-

Local legend claims that the original yew grove was planted here to honour a battle fought in Kingley Vale by local Saxons against marauding Vikings during the Dark Ages. The tumuli at the head of the vale were allegedly where the slain Viking kings were buried – hence the royal name of the valley. At the north end of the reserve there is also evidence of Stone Age flint mines.
