17. SMOO CAVE

- BB

The steep-sided narrow inlet of Geodha Smoo is on the magnificent far north coast near the village of Durness, Sutherland. The action of seawater and freshwater off the land has shaped a vast chamber with a gaping entrance 40m wide. The inviting cavern has been a refuge through the ages. Archaeologists have found traces of Stone Age people, and Vikings may have repaired ships here. While the mouth of the chamber can be explored freely, seasonal guided tours explore the cavern more deeply.
