19. TWR MAWR LIGHTHOUSE
The Twr Mawr Lighthouse on Llanddwyn Island in Anglesey cuts a dramatic figure, guarding the treacherous Menai Straits – although only in spirit, as operations ceased in 1975. On a clear day, its white-washed walls, built in 1845, may be glimpsed from up to seven miles away. From the lighthouse, take weather-worn coastal tracks past pilots’ cottages and over sandy banks before entering the shady conifers of Newborough Forest where red squirrels thrive.
