TO THE LIGHTHOUSE

Dusk falls on Godrevy Lighthouse midway between St Ives and Portreath on Cornwall’s pitted north coast. The 26m-high octagonal tower, thought to be the inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse, was built in 1859 on the slanted rock of Godrevy Island to warn marine voyagers of the perilous Stones reef.
