ONE of the Midland’s most popular street food events has been forced to cancel its second weekend at Coventry Cathedral.

Digbeth Dining Club was scheduled to host two weekends of street food and entertainment in the cathedral ruins to celebrate the start of the festive season.

Entry cost £3 for adults, £2 for students with under-14s getting in for free. However organisers from the cathedral said that the dismal weather affected attendance at the first event last weekend. Coventry Cathedral said that the decision was made to cancel the final street food event this weekend to ensure traders didn’t lose any money.

A statement posted on Digbeth Dining Club’s Facebook event said that low footfall and bad weather meant that hosting the event was unsustainable to continue over two weekends.

A spokesman from the cathe- dral added: “We are really disappointed to cancel this weekend but we are keen to take it as an opportunity to learn.

We are now concentrating on cementing plans for 2017 with a big emphasis on our summer programme.”

She added: “Unfortunately this weekend we just couldn’t have asked our traders to risk losing money, and as this event is not ticketed we don’t have much to gauge attendance on. A rainy day could just leave us with another poorly attended event and that’s not what we want.

“We want to strive to create great family events that people look for- ward to attending so on this occasion it’s back to the drawing board. We’ll be back with some great events next year for sure though.”

The cathedrals festive calendar will now end with the St Michael’s Singers fundraising carol concert on Saturday.

They will be joined by the Jaguar Land Rover Band in helping to raise funds for the NSPCC.

Tickets for the concert are £15 for adults, £7.50 for children and £13 for concessions. Family tickets are also available at £40. Tickets at www.ticketweb.co.uk or email tickets@saintmichaelssingers.org or call 0844 477 1000.
