The will to charge us extraordinary amounts

-

IT is time to put an end to the obscene charges that lawyers are charging us. Who gives them the right to charge us upwards of £500 to write on an A4 sheet of paper giving us permission to control our deceased loved one’s affairs when they die?

They are not the law of this land, they are simply leeches that are cashing in on every problem known to man.

Our next of kin should be given automatic rights to deal with this subject. I don’t expect a reply from a lawyer to this letter, they will not do this unless they are paid a wad of money capable of choking a donkey. Joe Fordham Walsgrave Coventry

Stop wasting cash and help elderly

HERE we go again – the elderly are living longer, the NHS cannot cope, social services are struggling... What a mess Coventry is in. You must not keep on blaming the old people of Coventry anymore. We are fed up being accused. This problem is not something new. It has been going on for many years. Now suddenly it has become national news on television and papers. It is only because governments have buried their heads in the sand, not wanting to do anything to solve the problem. So now they have come up with the idea of making the households pay extra council tax to help social services.

Instead of wasting billions of pounds on overseas spending and helping everybody else in the world, put this money into our own country where there is a serious problem.

Can anybody tell me how the rest of Europe cope with their elderly?

The likes of France, Germany, Belgium, Holland and the Scandinavians also have their elderly living longer. I don’t hear of their governments whingeing.

It has to be a lovely feeling, knowing you are living longer than your predecessors did.

Stop wasting money and help our own people. The Government should not come cap-in-hand to us. J Fraser Potters Green Coventry

A wishy-washy fact-free expose

DOES “Andy McDonald, Tile Hill” actually have employment with the Coventry Telegraph?

Not only does he appear in print more frequently than most of the news reporters, he manages to get the same left-wing propaganda – often based solely on an ideological misinterpretation of reality – into your publication.

He excelled on December 29 by writing a wishy-washy fact-free exposé of Theresa May in which he failed to make any valid point at all yet you put it on the letters page.

This comes alongside another Tile Hill resident (William Allen) condemning privatisation by the Conservatives.

Yet, when in Government, the Labour party failed to implement any changes to the status quo, and indeed proposed privatisation of Royal Mail in 2008. Dr Jonathan N Maxted Styvechale Coventry

Bring back coverage of classical music

AS WE approach the Culture Bid in 2017 I suggest that the Coventry Telegraph increases its support by making a New Year Resolution to reinstate its previous excellent coverage of classical music culture which has declined markedly over the last couple of years.

Music is one of the major planks of culture and there is a huge amount of wonderful and life enhancing music making of all genres happening throughout Coventry and Warwickshire, both amateur and professional.

If you have never heard a large symphony orchestra going full pelt, you are missing out on one of life’s great experiences!

At Coventry’s main cultural centre, the University of Warwick Arts Centre, major UK and European orchestras, including the local CBSO, can be heard regularly but with little or no mention in the local media.

The city needs to promote its vibrant musical life much more energetically, as well as seeking to provide a much needed new cultural venue in the city centre as part of its Bid to be UK City of Culture in 2021.

By publicising musical performances, the Telegraph could make a major contribution to achieving this accolade during 2017. John Burgess Milton Keynes Buckinghamshire

Poem It’s Party Time

Another year has come and gone thoughts turn to the New Year, families planning celebrations lots and lots of food and beer. Christmas is for kids we all say time for adults to let their hair down, some like to party in their homes while others head off up town. Many pubs and clubs get full drinkers like sardines in a tin, that means the drink is flowing whisky, lager, cocktails and gin. Then when the clocks strike twelve people raise glasses and cheer, couples embrace, strangers shake hands and wish each other a Happy New Year. Kevin Halls Bell Green Coventry
