Don’t let hospitals take all the strain

- By CATHERINE LILLINGTON Families Reporter catherine.lillington@

HEALTH bosses in Coventry and Warwickshire are reminding people there are other NHS services for urgent care as hospitals face extra strain.

The A&Es at University Hospital in Coventry, George Eliot in Nuneaton and Warwick Hospital have experienced a huge surge in demand for services so far this year.

And the Urgent Care Centre at St Cross in Rugby is also very busy.

Dr Steve Allen, a Coventry GP and clinical director at NHS Coventry and Rugby Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The public really can choose wisely to make sure they are receiving the right care for their condition at the right time in the right place.

“Many people think they need to visit a GP or hospital with minor illnesses and injuries but they are often better treated more quickly elsewhere, or at home by using simple remedies.” Your pharmacy can provide confidential, expert advice and treatment for a range of common illnesses and complaints without having to wait for a GP appointment. This service is for when it’s urgent but not an emergency.

By dialling 111 the caller will be given advice on where they can get the quickest help depending on the symptoms.

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free.

For an injury or illness that won’t go away, your GP practice has trained professionals who can advise you.

This is particularly important if you suffer from an underlying health condition.

Dealing with illness early can prevent any trips to hospital.
