Foodbank overwhelmed

- By CLAIRE HARRISON Nuneaton Reporter news@coventrytelegraph.net

FOODBANK bosses are feeling overwhelmed with support from people across Nuneaton and Bedworth after an impressive amount of donations.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Foodbank’s biggest collection of the year was even bigger than expected just before Christmas, with almost two tonnes of food dropped off.

A huge superstore collection at a stall set up at Tesco in Bedworth saw kind folk from across the borough turn up to help people in need.

Foodbank bosses say that the collection in December surpassed their expectation with an ‘amazing’ 1.8 tonnes of food donated.

“We are really so very grateful to all the generous shoppers who kindly donated food for those in need in Nuneaton and Bedworth,” said David Stanier of the foodbank.

“We have shared the donated food with Bedworth Foodbank, and they have received 609kgs of food, and we have received 1218kgs of food.

“We are indebted to Paul Budd, the manager of Tesco Bedworth, and to Bev McDonald, the community champion, for enabling this collection to take place, and to all the staff for their help and support.

“And to all the volunteers who helped over the two days.”

Calls for help are still made on a weekly basis from those who cannot afford to put food on the table.

Since January 6, the Nuneaton Foodbank has given food to 141 people, including 56 children, and volunteers have ‘signposted’ the adults visiting the town’s four centre to further help and support to help them move out of the crisis.

“We all would like to thank everyone who donates to the foodbank – churches, schools, local businesses and organisations, and individual donors, who regularly donate food to help those in need locally,” David added.

“We are always very pleased to receive individual and corporate cash donations, which help us to purchase bread and spread and other items, such as baby milk, nappies etc which we add to foodparcels as needed. We know that people like to know what we are particularly in need of when they are thinking of donating food, and at the moment we would be really grateful for puddings and tinned custard.”
