Do you recognise yourself at Rhyl?

-

RECENTLY you asked for memories of the Co-Op holiday camp at Rhyl.

Well, we have wonderful memories of one precious, glorious week at the camp. The weather was always hot and sunny.

Wooden chalets, something to do all day, family competitions, swimming in the sea, lawns to play on, lots of other happy families to share fun and games with. Sports day – the threelegged race, sack race (you went in to a sack and jumped the whole course, what fun!)

You name it, we did it. Fancy dress parade, sand castle competitions. My mum, Florence, had 16 children, and as Dad, Percy, worked on the railways, we had free train tickets.

Mum sent a large chest full of bed linen, towels, clothes, food, everything you would need for one week’s holiday. The chest was sent on the Tuesday and when we arrived on the Saturday everything was there ready for us.

We sang: “Goodnight campers, see you in the morning. Good night campers, soon another day will be dawning. Tears and sorrow make us forlorn, and until the dawn a new day is born. So we’ll sing goodnight campers. Good night.”

Oh, the tears as we sang those words. Mum took Ronnie, Eric Noel, Val, Phyllis and Eunice twice and our lovely niece Julie Aston on one holiday. Mum was chosen to be the Lady Mayoress, complete with a lovely outfit, and Ronnie and Julie were also rigged out in fancy gear.

I wonder how many of those people recognise themselves? We think this was 1950.

The wonderful care free times at Co-Op Camp Rhyl will never be forgotten. Phyllis Smith (née Tweed) Coundon Coventry Phyllis Smith shared these pictures from the Co-Op holiday camp at Rhyl, 1950. Do you recognise yourself? Let us know!
