RE: THE Graham Sutherland tapestry at Coventry Cathedral.

I first saw this as a 16-year-old who was training in Coventry, working at English Electric in Rugby in 1963.

Last weekend I visited Basildon Park in Reading with my grandaughter who is at Reading University. There is a room called the Sutherland room there, which is full of sketches by Graham Sutherland of the parts of the tapestry. Head, hands etc.

I always thought the bottom half looked a little strange but my granddaughter Tansy said he was seated. It suddenly made sense to me after all these years.

There is a portrait of Lord Illiffe there by Graham Sutherland and we were told that he was from Coventry and made his money in the newspaper and magazine business. We were told that his magazines were based first on bicycles and then motor vehicles. Sue Cooper Longford Coventry

It is the lack of funds, not laziness

IN reply to Joe Reynolds (Letters, February 27). I applaud your concern for the environment Mr Reynolds, and I am sure we all agree with them, but the items that I left out for collection were not a fridge or a freezer – of which I am fully coherent with the law and procedure for the disposing of these items. The items I put out were an oven and a hob. These are both mainly steel or other metal reclaimable items; there may be concern for the small amount of insulation between the panels but very negligible amount.

You are very quick to label people who leave items out as lazy but you are obviously in a different position to these, health-wise and financially, if you are able to handle the items yourself or pay someone to do it for you. Your comments about the dealers are very negative, in as much as when I am forced to replace an item I always look around for the best value for money and, if I end up paying to have the old one removed it reduces the value of the bargain.

It’s not decency that stops me paying to have items removed it’s lack of funds that are needed elsewhere.

So Mr Reynolds, I appreciate your comments, but hopefully these items purchased will see me out so I will not be giving you any more reason for concern. Ken Giles Mount Nod Coventry
