A COVENTRY man who has beaten cancer three times is now taking on another fight – in the boxing ring.

Karl Crowther has been taking part in Ultra White Collar Boxing, which returns to Stoneleigh Park on March 25, and his group has raised more than £6,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The 32-year-old was first diagnosed with skin cancer when he was 16 years old after his parents noticed an unusual mole on his back, he was treated and given the all clear.

In 2013, when he was 28, Karl was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in the bone in his leg.

Last year, Karl was diagnosed for the third time with cancer in his pelvis, he underwent more radiotherapy and has just been given the all clear.

Karl, who works as a ground worker for his dad’s company, said: “I had been suffering from a bad pain in my leg, I kept putting off going to the doctors but the pain got too much. I went for lots of tests and that’s when I was told I had Ewing sarcoma. It came as a huge shock but I kept strong and battled on.

“I went through 12 months of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiotherapy and after a stint in intensive care I managed to recover and beat cancer for the second time.

“Last year I went for my routine scan and I found out I had cancer in my pelvis, I had more radiotherapy and [recently] I found out that I have been given the all clear and have beat cancer for a third time.” Karl has been working hard during an eight-week free training programme at Warriors Den in Coventry. He said: “My uncle had taken part in Ultra White Collar Boxing and I went to the event to support him, I thought it was a fantastic way to raise money for Cancer Research UK, get fit and raise awareness for cancer. “I signed up and started my training in January, I’m really enjoying it so far and I’m learning new skills. The first session was hard but by the second session I was already seeing an improvement. As a group we’ve raised over £6,000 for Cancer Research UK so far. I’m really looking forward to the event and I’m hoping that my hard work, training and determination has paid off.”
