Town MPs tell of London terror
NUNEATON and Bedworth’s two MPS were both caught up in the terror attacks on London on Wednesday.
The pair were involved in the lockdown of Parliament as the horror unfolded outside.
A man drove a 4x4 vehicle onto a pavement on Westminster Bridge and ploughed into pedestrians before crashing into a gate near the Houses of Parliament at around 2.40pm.
He then fatally stabbed unarmed officer PC Keith Palmer, 48, before he was shot dead by armed police yards away.
Nuneaton MP Marcus Jones said he was “fine” and that he was voting at the time. He, like many other MPs, had been locked in the House of Commons chamber as Parliament has gone into lockdown.
Speaking as the drama unfolded, he said: “I don’t want to say too much until we know more details, the commons chamber is in shock at what’s happened.”
“My thoughts are with the families of those who may have lost their lives and with the police officer who has been injured doing his job, protecting our democracy.”
North Warwickshire MP Craig Tracey, who represents Bedworth, said: “We have no idea what is going on.
“We are in lockdown and have just been evacuated to a safe location.
“The mood is very calm, everything is being professionally handled by security teams, which was very reassuring.”
The attacker has not been identified.
He left four people dead, including PC Keith Palmer, a woman in her 40s, a man in his 50s and a terrorist.
One terrified eyewitness said that a vehicle had “deliberately” mounted a pavement a hit people before crashing into a barrier.
They said they saw between eight and ten people lying in the road injured.
Overnight, police have made seven arrests after raiding several properties, including one on Hagley Road in Birmingham. A total of seven arrests were made in Birmingham and London.
