Boro Wright out of luck in City’s late late show!

- By CHRIS PHILPOTTS Jordan Nicholson hit the woodwork nine minutes from time Mike Cole

TOMMY Wright refused to be downbeat – despite the Boro conceding a last-minute equaliser at home to Gloucester City.

In a game Nuneaton dominated, hitting the woodwork twice, they had only a point to show for it.

Wright said, in the grand scheme of his plans at the club, the goal was not to big a problem.

He said: “It is frustrating, the players are annoyed, I am annoyed, but we have to see it for what it is.

“It was a late goal in what was an end-of-season game. And one which will not change what we have planned here.”

After what was an even start, in which both teams had their chances to score, it was the Boro who broke the deadlock.

The goal came from their in-form midfield man Billy Daniels, via the penalty spot, as the former Coventry City man stepped up and slotted past Jasbir Singh to put the Boro in front. It was Singh who gave away the set-piece after rushing out and bringing down Jordan Nicholson when the on-loan midfielder was through on goal.

The goal continued what has been a fantastic few weeks for Daniels, who is finally showing the Boro fans what he can do after first arriving at the club in 2015.

He nearly added to his tally minutes into the second half after he linked up with Ashley Chambers on the edge of the box before sending a fierce drive against the crossbar.

The effort deserved a goal but Daniels could only stand, head in hands, as the ball cannoned away to safety.

The chances were at a premium after that as both teams stagnated in what was at times a pre-season atmosphere around the Coombe Abbey Arena. The crowd did have something to cheer – or nearly cheer – late on, though.

That was because Nicholson thundered an effort against the woodwork from distance with only nine min- utes remaining. The shot, like the effort from Daniels at the start of the half, had Singh well beaten, but once again the woodwork came to the rescue for the visitors.

Football is often a cruel game and it proved to be just that for Nuneaton in injury time as, after seeing their best chances denied by the crossbar twice, they then conceded to see their three-point haul converted to just one.

The goal came after Gloucester put together a fiveminute period of pressure, which Nuneaton could not deal with in the end, as Sam Avery rose and thundered a header past Tyrell Belford and into the back of the net.

It was a cruel goal to concede, but with nothing left but pride to play for this season, it will not be one that causes too many sleepless nights for Wright and his players. shortlist to fight Benn and if that happens, that’s massive for Mike.

“At six and eight-round level, Benn is the biggest name out there in Britain.

“Mike might get the chance to share a ring with him and if that fight happens, he can win.

“Mike can definitely punch and he would go for it.”

The show in Edgbaston is topped by Coventry cruiserweight Dilly Singh meeting Josh Burke for the vacant British Challenge Belt and tickets are available from 07796 015899.
