REMEMBER WHEN

-

APRIL 24, 1970: Children from Gosford Park Junior School have made friends with a Russian Arctic explorer and hope soon to contact him by amateur radio. Mario Cortese, aged 11, was researching for a project that eight children from class 4H were doing on Polar exploration, when he came across the name of Ernst Krenkel, a hero of the Soviet Union. Mr Krenkel was exploring the Arctic in 1934 when his ship was crushed by ice and sank. With 104 other men and women he was marooned on an ice-floe but managed to contact Russian aeroplanes by radio and they were eventually rescued after being adrift for 274 days. Were you a Gosford Park pupil? Do you remember Mr Krenkel’s story? Send your memories to the address on the opposite page or email letters@coventrytelegraph.net
