Students learn all about university life
STUDENTS from The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College were given the opportunity to find out more about university life.
The school was visited by representatives and undergraduate students from Cambridge University’s Clare College, who spoke to 40 Year 10 students about a range of topics – from making an initial application, to studying and living at university.
During the presentation, the students were also given some top tips about how they can maximise their potential in the coming years to help make university a realistic prospect.
In addition to the Cambridge University presentation, a number of students from Year 8 were able to visit Coventry University as part of a science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) initiative organised as part of the First Edition programme.
This programme offers handson enrichment days which aim to excite and enlighten young people on how STEM is fun, interesting, and can lead to a rewarding career.
During the visit, the Year 8 students were given a tour of the University’s facilities, heard about STEM careers, took part in practical workshop activities and a trebuchet tournament.
Alison Davies, head teacher, said “We actively encourage our students to aspire academically and these two activities have given our students a wonderful opportunity to explore what university has to offer and will help to unlock the potential our students have.”
