THE SLUG and Lettuce is coming to Coventry.

The city’s Establishment Bar and Grill is to be refurbished and rebranded this summer.

The bar is expected to close in early summer for refurbishment.

The work will take about a month then the business will reopen as the Slug and Lettuce.

The Establishment was bought by the Stonegate Pub Company last year. The company is the owner of the national Slug and Lettuce chain.

Assistant manager of the Establishment Callum Rigby said: “There is going to be a massive refurb. We’ve just announced it on Facebook and we had a really busy weekend - it had to be one of the busiest places in town.

“We’ve already changed hands and we’ll probably be closing at the end of June for about a month for the refurbishment.”

Trish Willetts, Coventry Business Improvement Dis- trict manager, said: “The Slug and Lettuce will be a welcome addition to Coventry and we’re thrilled that it will be arriving very soon.

“The business is a trusted and recognised brand and I’m sure it will be a hit with shoppers and visitors.

“The Slug and Lettuce is just one of many exciting businesses that will be arriving in the city centre over the next few years.

“Work on the other half of Cathedral Lanes Shopping Centre is confirmed to begin in the near future, bringing even more big name restaurants and the City Centre South development will help usher in a new era for Coventry.”

The new Slug and Lettuce will be the only one in Coventry. The nearest other ones are at the Touchwood Shopping Centre in Solihull and at Brindley Place in Birmingham.

The Establishment in Bayley Lane, Coventry city centre, dates back to the 18th century.

The Grade II listed building used to be known as County Hall and used as a court room.

Some of the features are still there including the entrance to the court cells and a judge’s chair. There was once an adjoining jail and even public hangings nearby.

There are plans to turn the floors above the restaurant and bar into student accommodation.

The plans are separate from the opening of the Slug and Lettuce.
